Notice: • In the early 1990s, Hawaii’s papaya industry was facing disaster because of the deadly papaya ring spot virus. (reason for genetic engineering) (2) • The NewLeaf™ potato (GM food) was developed using naturally-occurring bacteria found in the soil known as Bacillus thuringiensis to protect it from the Colorado potato beetle (4) • The USA imports 10 % of its sugar from other countries, while the remaining 90 % is extracted from domestically grown sugar beet and sugarcane. (9) • Testing on GMOs in food and feed is routinely done using molecular techniques like DNA microarrays or qPCR (elements like p35S, tNos, pat, or bar or event-specific markers for the official GMOs like Mon810, Bt11, or GT73.) (3) • This is the testing process of GMOs in a diagram: • GMOs are very safe to consume (5) • It is believed that consumption of these genetically engineered foods can cause the development of diseases that are immune to antibiotics. Inquiry Reflection

A question I have been wondering about is GMOs (Genetically modified organisms) safe to eat. First, we have to know what are GMOs. GMOs is a plant, animals, or an organism that are modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering. Gmos are used to help farmers to prevent crops and food loss. According to "GMOS and Your Health" " do not affect you differently than non-GMO foods”(GMOS and Your Health). This shows the answer to my question about GMOs being safe for humans. A negative thing about GMOs is that GMOs are bad for the environment. GMOs affect biodiversity, the existing species can be overrun by the more dominant species because of the lack of nutrients that the existing species are getting. Another negative thing about GMOs for humans is that they can change your DNA. “Concern has also surrounded the idea that genetically modified DNA would be unstable, causing damage (via unintentional mutations) not only to the crop but also to whoever would consume it. Mutat...

PSA Video/Reflection

https://youtu.be/F3Pf2_FxZ8o      The ideas that I'm communicating with my audience to stay away from Amerian foods because health is at risk and to keep eating your culture foods. The specific resources that has helped flesh out ny ideas is the different PSA videos we watched in class. The PSA video about one about animals abuse has helped me because it showed me that people don't have to speak to spread a message, but can have words on the screen. Another video that helped me is the panda because it spreads the message to save pandas without speaking and show facts about the endangered species which spread the message. My old school work has helped because I remembered watching a documentary call "Super Size Me" and that documentary shows how terrible fast food is. This guy eats McDonald's for 30 days straight and shows the terrible things it does to your body. The genre of PSA and the medium which is video has helped me commuicate my ideas because ...

Summary of Food Advertisements

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mROjY3I2umw   Summary:      In this Popeyes ad, they were showing their new food item at the time which was the Popeyes chicken sandwich. This commercial was showing the crispy chicken with its toasted buns and included a spicy or a classic option of the sandwich. This ad was only 15 seconds, but it's described very well that it includes sensory language. This connects to "A matter of taste: Food ads work better if all senses are involved" because Popeyes's commercials used the 5 senses to enhance the customer's grasp of the food.       The Sensory languages being used in this commercial are the 4 senses which are sight, sound, and taste. The first one they used is sight, so the audience can see how delicious the Popeyes chicken Sandwich is. We see it looks crispy, well-cooked chicken with mayo and pickles, but you can always take them off. Next, they use sounds like their classic Popeyes music, and the person talki...

Graphic Novel Presentation

Reflection :       The most exciting part about this project is being able to draw all of my ideas and be creative, so people can have a visual of my experience with my mom. The youtube channel "Munchies" specifically "The Best Secret Chinese Restaurant in Chicago"(3 Little Pigs Chi) video has helped me. This video has helped me develop my ideas for this project because he shows how his experience/progress on how he got to where he is today. He likes to cook with care and loves building connections with customers. In the video, he shows his care for his customers and they don't have to pay at the moment, they can pay back within a week if they don't have the money right now. This inspired me to use my recipe to show how my mom is when she cooks. My siblings have helped me construct my ideas on how important my mom's cooking is. They helped me show how symbolic and significant my mom’s cooking is. We don’t even notice how important your parent’s cooking...

Dominican's Favorite Dish In Washington Heights, the little Dominican Republic, people's favorite dish is mangú con los tres golpes. This dish comes from the Dominican Republic and is popularized in Washington Heights since there is a lot of Dominicans living there. The recipe for this dish includes the following ingredients green plantains, Fry Cheese, Salami induveca, eggs, and red onion. I can remember waking up every morning to my mom frying onions to cook this dish because my eyes would get watery. I could see the plátanos boiling while hearing the sizzling sound of salami, cheese, and eggs being fried in the pan. I remember sneaking a roll of salami while my mom was not looking, so I can prepare before the meal.  My aim was to give the audience an image of my childhood by using the 5 senses. Using the 5 senses will give the audience the imagery and the feel of my culture. Instead of telling you how...

My own "What Do I Eat"

Josue Lantigua, a Dominican teen, eats outside with my friends with my typical day's worth of food in Washington Heights. My astonishing typical day's worth of food throughout June contains 1,305 kcals. I'm 16 years old at a height of 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and 130 pounds. I live in a two-bedroom apartment with four siblings and my mom. I share a small room with two brothers, while my mom shares the other room with my sister. As time goes my mom didn't have time to cook for us in the morning, so I had to learn how to cook my favorite foods. The learning process was very difficult when you have no experience of being in the kitchen, but it paid off in the end. Having energy is very important if I want to play basketball. Basketball keeps my mind off of things. The food is what makes me strive for greatness in my life.
