Inquiry Reflection
A question I have been wondering about is GMOs (Genetically modified organisms) safe to eat. First, we have to know what are GMOs. GMOs is a plant, animals, or an organism that are modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering. Gmos are used to help farmers to prevent crops and food loss. According to "GMOS and Your Health" " do not affect you differently than non-GMO foods”(GMOS and Your Health). This shows the answer to my question about GMOs being safe for humans. A negative thing about GMOs is that GMOs are bad for the environment. GMOs affect biodiversity, the existing species can be overrun by the more dominant species because of the lack of nutrients that the existing species are getting. Another negative thing about GMOs for humans is that they can change your DNA. “Concern has also surrounded the idea that genetically modified DNA would be unstable, causing damage (via unintentional mutations) not only to the crop but also to whoever would consume it. Mutations in DNA are closely tied to cancer and other diseases, and thus mutagenic substances can have dire effects on human health (Will GMOs Hurt My Body? The Public’s Concerns and How Scientists Have Addressed Them). This shows the unsafety of these GMOs, but most of the GMO foods are mostly safe depending on where you get them from. To answer this question, GMOs are safe to eat because we humans don’t notice what our foods come from, and most of these food are modified making them safe to consume.
